The following is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) that get
asked in the Front Desk conference from time to time. It may answer some
questions that new users may have from time to time. It will be updated
on a (hopefully) regular basis and be available in the Front Desk.

Internet: How do I send a message to someone on GEnie via the Internet?

To send a message to GEnie you would enter:
@genie.geis.com,internet
where  is the person's GEnie address.

Why can't I post to the NetNews (i.e. comp.sys.mac.*) conferences?

You need to have write priviledges in order to post to these
conferences. Please, send a note to Merlin if you wish to post to these
conferences.

Why do some user's names appear in italics within 'Who's Online'?

User's names who appear in italics have their chat mode turned off
because they are busy responding to messages, downloading, etc. You can
not invite people who's names appear in italics to a chat (if you do,
you'll receive a message from the system informing you that the person
would prefer not to chat at this time).

Why can't I use the Find command?

Find is currently disabled. It takes up alot of CPU time and
occasionally causes the system to crash, and the Administrator is rather
hesitant to enable it with the number of lines MAGIC has (currently 21).

Is there a way to get rid of all the unread flags on messages in a
conference without having to read every one of them or option-click the
messages one after the other?

Just click the conference.

What utilities are used to compress (and decompress) the files available
for downloading from MAGIC?

Most of the files are compressed using Stuffit Deluxe, Compact Pro or
DiskDoubler.  The most recent versions of Compact Pro, Stuffit Expander
and DiskDoubler-Expand are all available in the files section (most of
the are under the 'Best Of' folder).  It should be noted that all files
uploaded to MAGIC's New Uploads section should be compressed using one
of these formats in order to save disk and keep things organized.

A file with the suffix .dd is a Disk Doubler file.
A file with the suffix .sit is a Stuffit file
A file with the suffix .cpt is a Compact Pro file.
A file with the suffix .sea is a Self-Expanding archive.

Where is the _______ file directory?

If you can no longer find a file directory that was there before, it may
have been moved under the New Stuff folder or currently offline. There
are alots of changes happening, so have a look in the New Stuff folder
if the file you're looking for isn't in the top level.

Why is it that I cannot open the ________ conference icon?

Either the conference is one that you have not requested or cannot have
access to, or it is a conference which is under construction and will be
openable when it is completed.

I think the following change should be made to First Class...

Suggestions for enhancements to FirstClass (not MAGIC) should be
directed to the 'First Class Suggestions' conference under 'Important
Info'.

Why do I occasionally get the message 'This is not a FirstClass server'?

You will get that message if the server does not pick up the call within
30 or so seconds. Typically this may happen to people who have turned
off the volume on their  modems and can't hear the line just ring and
ring. Try dialing again or leaving the volume on.

Internet: What is my Internet address?

Your Internet address is:
_@magic-bbs.corp.apple.com.
If your name is Murphy A. Brown, your Internet adress would be
murphy_brown@magic-bbs.corp.apple.com.

The gateway uses the same name matching system that FirstClass uses when

you send a local message.  Therefore, if I send a message to "Murphy
Brown," then the server will enter your name as "Murphy A. Brown."

When you send a message to the internet from MAGIC, the gateway picks up
your full name.  It will say that the internet message is
"Murphy_A._Brown@magic-bbs.corp.apple.com."

In the same way, a user on the internet could send a message to
"Murp_Brow" and it would get  to you.  Or "M_A._Bro" would work too.  It
wouldn't work if the user sent a message to "John@magic-
bbs.corp.apple.com" because we have many people named John online.  The
internet user would get a message that there are more name matches, and
that they must be more specific when sending the message.

Internet: What is a bang address?

A bang address explicitly states routing on the internet.  For example,
if a system on the internet didn't know how to get to you on MAGIC, then
they could state a bang address instead of the normal internet address
we use. A sample bang address would be:

apple.com!mumbo.apple.com!jumbo.apple.com!goofy.apple.com!magic-
bbs.corp.apple.com!Bart_Simpson

The ! marks are called a 'bang' symbol.

Internet: Where can I get information on the Internet?

There are a few files with general information on the Internet in the
Telecom files folder in the file directories. Additionally, there is
some information in this FAQ List and in the News conference about how
to send messages and receive using the Internet gatway on MAGIC.

Internet: How do I get access to the Internet?

Everyone has access automatically. You can send private mail to users on
the Internet by entering ',internet' in the TO: field
of your message. For example if you were sending Mark Windrim a message
on the Internet you would have the following lines in the TO: field of
your message:

TO: windrim1@apple.com,internet

Internet: How do I send a message to someone on AppleLink via the
Internet?

To send a message to AppleLink you would enter:

@applelink.apple.com,internet

where  is the person's AppleLink address.

Internet: How do I send a message to someone on CompuServe via the
Internet?

To send a message to CompuServe you would enter:
xxxx.yyyy@compuserve.com,internet
where xxxx.yyyy is the person's CompuServe address. Note that the
CompuServe comma is replaced by a period.

Internet: How do I send a message to someone on America Online via the
Internet?

To send a message to America Online you would enter:

@aol.com,internet

where  is the person's America Online address.
